No need for
rubber boots this morning! During the 7 years we spent in Saskatchewan, we
never had the chance to visit Cypress Hills. It is an area that is very
different from the rest of the Prairies. Lodgepole pines are very where in the
campground. Their diameter is relatively small considering their impressive height.
The wind makes wonderful sounds when their head moves. In the forest, the trees
are quite close together but the undergrowth is clear. Their trunk is very
straight with only branches toward the top. Easy to understand that they were
very good building material!
It is very
nice to be settle for 3 nights. We go visit Fort Walsh today, Wednesday. It was
the RCMP post for the West (NWMP) at the end of the 1800. Until the 1960’s,
their horses were bred there and horse training was also done there. The visit
is very interesting. On the way back, we stop at a winery. They mostly make
berry wine as frost has destroyed the crop of the last 2 years. The cherry wine
and the one made with rhubarb are particularly interesting!
Thursday,
we stay around and visit a bit the park. Cypress Hills is the highest spot
between the Rockies and Labrador (more than 1 200 m). There are very nice
vista points. A large part of the park is a communal pasture with its Texas
gates and cows! It is our first camp fire since we started the trip. There is
plenty of free wood available, a bit wet but with patience and some work it
gives good results. Our friends from Edmonton, Anna and John, are coming to the
campground for a couple of nights. We had the chance to talk and synchronize
our visit! We have a potluck together for supper! Very nice to be able to visit
on this wonderful mountain!
